Life has got multiple correct answers.

Image
 In mathematics, most problems have just one right answer. Life is very different, and far more complicated. Even when situations look more or less the same, the same question can have several answers, and all of them can be right. What is right or wrong depends on a person's own thinking and on what that person values most in life. This article shares a few examples of exactly that. (Photograph of Dr. Shridhar Venkatesh Ketkar, courtesy the internet)          Dr. Shridhar Venkatesh Ketkar lived from 1884 to 1937. Through his own study and relentless effort, he brought out the *Dnyanakosh* — a vast series of reference volumes — and faced heavy criticism at times for it. He studied first in Amravati and then at Wilson College, Mumbai, before earning his PhD at Cornell University in the US. Back in India, he joined the University of Calcutta as a professor. In 1920, he married Edith Victoria Cohen, a German Jew. Miss Edith embraced Hindu religion and was give...

Realisation of my poverty

Image
 "How poor am l!" - this question arose in my mind. This feeling had never come to my mind before. But today the feeling of poverty had become dense in my heart. Before this, in such a situation, I used to feel encouraged. I used to feel enthusiastic, but today this feeling came to my mind for the first time. I was a little startled. But then I realized that it is true.  "Indeed I am poor!" _(Picture generated with the help of Artificial Intelligence)_ This is from about two years ago. I had gone to Nashik. At that time I went to a book exhibition there. In the exhibition, thousands of books in English and Marathi were displayed. Of those, I had read only a few books, while I had seen some books or at least had some information about them. So a thought suddenly came to my mind that, "Books are wealth. But even though the books I have read so far are many, they are very few compared to the thousands of books here. And if we consider the total number of books in ...

Image

Don't learn this from teachers!

Image
 Teachers' behaviour is an important factor in the process of education. Teachers are human too, so their conduct can't always be expected to be perfect. That's why students are expected to follow only their teachers' good conduct. This very expectation is expressed in the Upanishads, part of India's ancient knowledge tradition. There is a text called the Taittiriya Upanishad, and it has a chapter called Shikshavalli, which contains the following passage. While instructing his students, the teacher says: 'Yani asmakam sucharitani | tani sevitavyani | na itarani ||' It means: follow only our good qualities, not the rest, that is, our flaws. Jnana Prabodhini in Pune is a distinctive institution in the field of education. The late Yashwantrao Lele had been a teacher there since its earliest days, and I heard him speak in 2012–13. He made a point that day: "As teachers, we consciously try to teach students many things. But are we paying attention to what th...
